Please Note: Students are placed in classes with their age peers, usually with only two or three grade
levels per classroom.
Travel the USA: Traverse the United States, dis-
covering its mountains, forests, and plains; its
Great Lakes, sea coasts, deserts, and swamps;
its people, many cultures, and history. Explore
the states through creative, interdisciplinary
activities involving math, science, literature,
art, drama, and cooking! Grades PK-K
Science Puzzlers: Challenge the laws of physics
and chemistry! Defy gravity, melt stuff in cold air,
make a ball fall uphill, and explore other amazing
scientific phenomena. Grades 1-2
Aquatic Biology: Create aquatic eco-systems.
Explore tide pools, coral reefs, and oceans.
Investigate marine life, from prehistoric sharks
to living aquatic organisms. Grades 1-3
The Art of Math: Investigate geometric patterns,
both 2-D and 3-D. Create tessellations and
Escher-like drawings. Build 3-D models from a
variety of materials. Grades 1-4
Rocketry and Space Exploration: Test principles
of aerodynamics with models of your own design.
Study NASA's space missions. Build and launch
bottle rockets. Grades 3-8
"Improv" Your Writing: Use improvised scenes
as a basis for creative writing as you work to
improve and improvise your writing! A book of
final writing projects will be sent to each
participant. Grades 3-8
Theater Club: Experience the exhilarating world
of live theater! Develop characters as you play
theater games and rehearse skits, culminating
in a performance for family and friends.
Grades 1-8
Princesses, Knights, and Dragons: Discover
your favorite princesses, bravest knights, and their
adventures with dreadful dragons. Create your
own stories and fairy tales. Grades 1-2
Medieval Mania: Immerse yourself in medieval
history and legend. Walk into the age of knights
and wizards. What kind of castle would you envision and design? Create your own coat-of-arms.
Celebrate with a medieval feast! Grades 3-8
Drawing from Inside Out and Upside Down: How do you draw what you see? Train your eyes
to perceive accurately shapes, relationships, and
perspectives. Discover the math in art with ratios
and proportions. Experiment with different types
of drawings. Grades 1-8
The Language of Organic Chemistry: The first
step in understanding the science and art of
organic chemistry is to know how to name com-
pounds from their structures and how to draw or
build compounds from their names. Using mole-
cular models, build a variety of organic compounds
and learn to name them according to IUPAC rules.
($30 lab fee for molecular model kit) Grades 4-8
Creating Games from Scratch: Learn how to
program computer games in Scratch, developed
at MIT and used to create a wide variety of games,
from simple to complex. Grades 3-8
Lego Mindstorms Robotics: Create an auto-
nomous robot using motors, gears, and sensors.
Program it to complete challenges of increasing
complexity. ($10 lab fee) Grades 3-8
Advanced Scratch: Extend your knowledge of
programming in Scratch. Advance your skills and
create more sophisticated games. (Prerequisite:
Creating Games from Scratch) Grades 4-8
Afternoon Program
Grades PreK-5: Locomotion
Rotate with your peer groups to a creative blend
of subjects and hands-on activities, such as art,
drama, science, history, cooperative games, and
outdoor play.
Grades 6-8: Two exciting workshop courses:
Investigate Fields of Science: Immerse yourself
in the different challenges of various sciences, such
as physics, astronomy, and biology.
The Big Picture: Explore the communication of
big ideas through discussion leading to sketching,
designing, and painting a poster that effectively
supports your cause.
