Morning Courses

Writing and the Arts-Create and Publish: Let a painting, photograph, film, music, acting serve as a catalyst to in spire you to write. Listen to music, see pieces dramatized, view prize-winning photographs and posters and find the excitement of writing as a response: poetry, narration, exposition, stories, biographical and historical fiction. Be published in the Project 2012 writing magazine. Submit your work to several national writing contests. Published author-instructors: Joan Franklin Smutny and Gail Arnold

Harry Potter-Ology: Immerse yourself in the Wizarding World. Conduct wizard research, be sorted into a house, formulate spells in Latin, play a game of Quiddich, and concoct strange potions, Butterbeer, and Wizard Candy. Compete for the House Cup and participate in our "End of Term Feast"! Instructor: Leslie LeResche

Math Rocks! Explore "out-of-the-box" math topics, such as math and visual arts, "Eureka!" moments in math, cultural math, math analysis, and more during the first two weeks of class. Then choose independent topics for in-depth study. Instructor: Carol Fisher

The Chemical Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Join the famous sleuth and his sidekick Dr. Watson in solving modern tales inspired by the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These new tales specifically engage the chemical expertise of the detective (and the student). Begin each session reading the first part of the case. Propose some possible chemical investigations in order to solve it, and perform the proposed chemical tests. Then compare your conclusions with that of the master detective. If It Flies, We'll Build It! Build and launch your own space shuttle glider, exotic paper airplanes, and 2-liter Bottle Rocket. Explore the history of flight, including a comprehensive look at space exploration from equipment and personnel that got America to the moon in 1969 to present-day endeavors! Instructor: Jeff Gange

Computer Design and Animation: Explore Adobe Creative Suite as you learn to manipulate images, create vector drawings, and develop Flash animations. Instructor: Artyzen Pak

World War II, 1937-1945: Represent the leaders of many of the countries that fought World War II. Re-enact the principal decisions of the war, from the Japanese invasion of China in 1937 and the German invasion of Poland in 1939 to their un conditional surrender in 1945, using large flat maps and miniature military figures. Then re-fight the war, making your own strategic decisions in a large-scale board game similar to Axis and Allies. Instructor: Christopher Freeman

Philosophy Café: Join a discussion using games, focus materials, and Socratic dialogue to explore the world and our place in it. Use reasoning, questions, discourse, and reflection, while at the same time learning about great ethical and philosophical ideas. Instructor: Robin Harragin

Electronics and Robotics Lab: Construct various projects such as photophobic bugs, traffic lights, electronic games, siren, dice, and robots. Solder and assemble circuit boards, decipher technical instructions and read schematic diagrams as you progress at your own pace and level through projects of increasing difficulty and complexity. ($75 lab fee) Instructors: Michael Gorelick and Brian Kawooya

Filmmaking I: Explore science and mechanics of filmmaking with 16mm film and camera equipment, including a Bolex camera and a Sekonic light meter. Work with peers on film crews to create cinematic shorts. Instructor: Johnny White

Filmmaking II: (Prerequisite: Filmmaking I) Advance your filmmaking skills as you work with your peers on film crews, using 16mm and digital equipment to create surrealistic stream-of- consciousness films. Instructor: Johnny White

Drawing and Sculpture: Begin 2-dimensionally with studies of shape, form, and space, experiencing the creative process of observing and designing 3-D works of art, form, and space in a 2-D drawing. With observations and creative drawings serving as inspiration, move on to the sculpting process using a variety of techniques and materials, such as clay building and carving, sculpture assemblages, wood, and more! Fashion and Costume Design: Discover sketching, mood boards, fabric choices, and clothing construc tion. Costume the play for Actors Workshop. Select your own fabric and create a one-of-a kind garment of your own design to model during a runway show. Instructor: Jamie Kendall

Advanced Fashion Design: Immerse yourself in fashion design! Deepen your understanding and hone your skills at sketching, mood boards, fabric choices, and clothing construction. Create a three- piece collection and model your favorite design during a runway show. Instructor: Jamie Kendall

Actors Workshop: Enter the exhilarating world of live theater! Build a true ensemble through theater games and improvisation. Rehearse scenes and perform! Instructor: Matt Rieger

Music Composition: Explore compositional tech niques in the context of creating your own musical scores. Experiment with scoring for films, including methods for seamlessly blending both soundtrack and film. Instructor: Craig Parsons

Pop Music in Performance: NO auditions required. NO experience necessary. Are you hardworking and enthusiastic? Sing (popular songs) and dance (original choreography) your way into the hearts of an audience. Instructors: Leah Novak and Heidi Malnar

Afternoon Workshops

Film Noir: Create your own film following the basic rules of this distinctly American genre. Walk into the world of such classics as Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce, Johnny Guitar, The Big Heat, The Lady from Shanghai, and The Maltese Falcon. Come to know the greats of Hollywood! Instructor: Johnny White

Historic Games of Strategy and Diplomacy: Re-enact history through games of strategy. Expand empires through 4,000 years of History of the World; smite thine enemies in Ancient Conquest; invade Britannia; crown your pretender in Kingmaker; colonize exotic lands during the Age of Imperialism; lay iron track across the prairie as an Empire Builder; make the world safe for democracy in Diplomacy; fight World War II in Axis and Allies. Fight past wars to prevent them in the future. Instructors: Christopher Freeman and Dale Ridder

Web Design: Create dynamic websites using Dreamweaver. Write HTML code, create Cascading Style Sheets, integrate Flash animations, deploy your creation to the web. Instructor: Artyzen Pak

Science of Engineering: Employ principles of physics and chemistry to design and construct contraptions of various sorts, such as amusement park rides, multi- step traps and snares, cars, towers, bridges, pick-up toys, and jumping frogs. Instructor: Sara Ryder

Papa Vito's Cosmic Circus: Ever wondered what it would be like to be in a circus? Here’s your chance! Witness the transformation of Dr. D into Guiseppe the Clown. Design a face, compile a costume, and develop your clown persona. Create the Cosmic Circus, in cluding set design, choreography, and musical score. Our newly formed circus troupe will perform at Project 2012's Open House. Skills needed: a sense of humor, juggling, gymnastics, dancing, singing, composing, as well as artists, craftsmen, photographers and cinema tographers (digital). Instructor: Vito Dipinto
