1st - 6th Grade Courses (as indicated)

Creative Writing: Compose stories, prose, and poetry inspired by such catalysts as posters, paintings, films, books, and stories; get published in our creative writing magazine. Grades 1-6
Math Meets Literature: Discover math in new and favorite stories! Read literature that incorporates math and then explore those math concepts via hands-on activities. Grades 1-2
Geometric Design and Construction: Explore geometry hands-on with compass and straightedge; construct geometric figures; create intricate designs; develop geometric intuition. Grades 3-6
Aquatic Biology: Create aquatic environments; examine fish facts, fables, and foibles; investigate prehistoric sharks(and study a fossilized Megalodon tooth! Grades 1-2
Detective Science: Can you solve the case of the missing teddy bear? Whet your sleuthing skills, dauntless detectives, and begin the investigation! Grades 1-2
Crime Lab Chemistry: Reconstruct the crime scene; examine clues from soil and fingerprints, etc. Using crime lab technology, piece your evidence together and solve the crime! Grades 3-6
Physics Olympics: Explore the principles of power and force as you create contraptions that race, run, spin, and fly. Will yours go fastest, longest, highest . . . or fizzle out? Grades 3-6
Robotics I: Design, construct, and control (you hope) your own sound-activated, mechanical, model robot. $30 lab fee. Grades 4-6
Robotics II: Students who already have built Scooter can construct Scrambler, a six-legged, all-terrain robot with a state-of-the-art infrared tracking beam. $50 lab fee. Grades 5-6
Computer Lego Lab: Create and engineer computerized robots. Employ gears, sensors, and motors to make them faster, smarter, and trickier! Grades 3-6
Medieval Times: Explore the age of castles, queens, and knights whence evolved unicorns, hobbits, wizards, and dragons. Design your own castle; create your coat of arms; experience a medieval feast. Grades 1-4

Diplomatic Games of Strategy and Intrigue: Build your own rail network across the prairie in (Empire Builder.( Working with teammates, negotiate (make or break( deals; deliver the goods, create a monopoly; and become a tycoon! Grades 4-6

Chess Club: Challenge your peers, whether novice or advanced, as you explore basic rules, openings, end games, and (if you are ready) highly sophisticated strategies. Grades 1-6
Artist's Studio: Create multi-dimensional masterpieces of mixed media, methods, and muses, such as collage, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, pastels, and watercolor. Grades 1-6
Musical Theater: Grades 1-2 will perform Peter Pan; grades 2-4, Snoopy; grades 4-6 Bye Bye Birdie. Grades 1-6

Application / Placement

Apply early! Students are placed and classes assigned according to postmark dates of their applications. The teacher recommendation, if required, may be sent at a later date.

All Applicants: Only students who will be entering 1st through 6th grades in fall 2008 may apply to the summer 2008 programs in Glenview.

New Students: A completed, signed teacher recommendation form is required. This may be sent along with application or under separate cover.

Returning Students: Students who previously have attended programs of The Center for Gifted are eligible upon our timely receipt of their applications.

Students in any city or educational setting may apply. They need not be enrolled in their school's gifted programs. Achievement test scores of most Center for Gifted students rank at or above the 95th percentiles in some areas. We sensitively consider exceptions. Parents may request a conference with the Director regarding their child's particular circumstances.

Download and complete the application and mail it in with the required deposit of $50 or full tuition. Applications without at least the deposit will not be processed. Applications are not accepted via phone, fax, email, or online.

Parents are notified of their children's enrollment status within two weeks of application or, for new students, following review of their teacher recommendations. A week or two before each program begins, students receive enrollment packets with individual class assignments, maps, etc.

 

Payment / Refunds / Withdrawls

A deposit of $50 per program via check or money order, or full tuition via check, money order, or Visa or Mastercard, must accompany application. All deposits are credited to tuition. The full balance of tuition for Glenview is due on June 30. Please make checks payable to The Center for Gifted.

If a student withdraws before the program begins, tuition is refunded upon written request, minus a $50 processing fee. There are no credits or refunds for withdrawing after a program begins, nor for absences for any reason. The Center for Gifted does not offer sibling discounts.

Lab fees for Robotics classes are not incurred until classes are assigned and are payable on the first day of the program.
