Le Français: Embark on an effervescent adventure in French conversation, culture, and cuisine.  Research correlates early exposure to languages with higher scores in math, reading, and musical ability.  French teacher, Amy Hansberger of Language at Lunch, Inc. engages students with fun folk songs, movement, and games incorporating the TPR method for language learners.  Madame Hansberger has worked with young students for over 16 years, sharing her love of French language and culture.  She believes in language acquisition via the theory of multiple intelligences, appealing to all types of learners.  Grades 1-6  Instructor: Amy Hansberger
Bid, Bargain, Sell!  Buy low and sell high.  Make a million on the first day, just to lose it all on the second day, only to make two million on the third day.  Do you dare to take a ride on Worlds of Wisdom and Wonder’s stock market?  Warning: It is not a ride for the faint hearted.  Do you buy Nerdstrom or sell it?  Is Super Sports Wear a good investment?  Is Macro-Hard near the end of their profit potential?  Participants will use their critical thinking skills in a game situation to make decisions based on news and world events.   Who knows . . . this may be the first step in discovering the new “Wall Street King.”   Grades 4-6  Instructor: Allen Studnitzer (traded futures on financial instruments, grains, and stocks on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade for over fifteen years).

Program Structure / Application / Placement

The winter 2010 Worlds of Wisdom and Wonder programs meet on Sunday afternoons for five consecutive weeks, each. Students choose their own courses from a variety of exciting topics (see above). The development of problem-solving skills and creativity is inherent in the framework for all courses. Projects and activities evoke active, hands-on participation.

For our Burr Ridge program, students in kindergarten explore diverse, challenging, creative subject areas in a single, self-contained classroom. Students in 1st-6th grades enroll in two courses, each of which meets for about 75 minutes each Sunday. Students in 6th-11th grades enroll in one course, which meets for the entire 2½ hours. Students in 6th grade may choose either format.

Applications are accepted by mail, in person, or online through our secure registration system. To apply by mail, download the application form, complete all items, and send it with the required full tuition payment to: The Center for Gifted, Box 364, Wilmette, IL 60091. To apply online, click the link above. Enrollment remains open until programs begin.

Parents are notified of enrollment status within two weeks after we receive their complete applications. Applications from new students are not complete until we also receive their teacher recommendations, which may be sent separately.

Students who are accepted are placed in classes on a rolling basis, per postmark (or online) dates of their applications. A week or two before programs begin, parents receive enrollment packets with individual class assignments, maps, directions, and information about our on-site parent seminars.

Payment / Refunds / Withdrawals

Tuition per winter program is $190 and is due in full with application. Make checks and money orders payable to The Center for Gifted, or complete the credit card authorization. Tuition includes a $30 non-refundable application fee. Lab fees (see course descriptions) are payable on the first day of classes.

If a student withdraws from a program before it begins, a refund will be issued for tuition paid minus the $30 non-refundable application fee. There are no credits or refunds for withdrawing or enrolling after a program begins, nor for absences for any reason. There are no sibling discounts.

Financial Assistance

The Center for Gifted will consider payment plans or tuition reductions for families who can demonstrate financial need. Please telephone us for information and financial assistance forms.

Parent Seminars

Parent education is a unique focal point and purpose of The Center for Gifted. During all programs, we offer seminars designed for parents of gifted children. They focus on effective parenting; on differentiation, acceleration, creativity, and the educating of gifted children as they face challenges at school and at home. Specific information about our winter seminar topics and speakers will be included in enrollment packets and available on our website.
